Five soil profiles and 55 soil samples were collected from soils that were under different land uses in a typical karst catchment, Southwest China. The total contents of rare earth elements (REE) are significantly lower (<100 mg kg −1) than the average value of soils in China (181 mg kg −1).
192 are actually moreabundantin the Earth'scrust than Cd and Se. No other group of elements in the periodic system displays such a great similarity as the REEs.

Résumé : The rare earth elements (REE) have been successfully used in the past to trace weathering and water/rock interaction in lateritic soil systems. In the present study we used the REE to monitor chemical transfer processes in French Guiana along a toposequence within rain forest soils and at the soil/plant interface.
